Zaha Hadid’s building, opened in 2014: forty-five thousand aluminium panels, no two the same, over a shape with no straight lines and no obvious front. It was built on the site of a demolished baseball stadium, and during the excavation they found a long stretch of the Joseon city wall and a floodgate underneath, which are now preserved in the open air beside it.
You can therefore stand in one spot and see a six-hundred-year-old wall, a twenty-first-century parametric roof, and the Dongdaemun wholesale fashion towers that trade all night. That is Seoul.
What it costs
⭐ Free to walk through, over and around — the roof is a public park you can climb, the interior circulation is open, and the excavated wall park is open ground.
The exhibitions inside are individually ticketed and vary constantly.
When to go
The building is open late. The neighbourhood around it does not really start until the evening, and the wholesale malls opposite trade through the night.
The LED rose field installation in the grounds is a recurring seasonal thing rather than a permanent fixture — check before making a trip for it.

Getting there
Dongdaemun History & Culture Park station, lines 2, 4 and 5, comes up directly underneath it.

If you only have an hour
Walk the outside first, all the way round, because the building genuinely reads differently from every angle. Then the wall park: the excavated Joseon foundations, the floodgate, and the small museum built into the ground beside them, which is free.
Then Heunginjimun — Dongdaemun itself, the east gate — five minutes north.
What people get wrong
Coming only for the building and missing the wall it is standing next to.
